Why Sherwin-Williams Loggia (SW 7506) and Eminent Bronze (SW 9015) Ground This Mid-Century Modern Entry

Preparing a mid-century modern home near Memorial Stadium for market demanded a color palette that felt both current and true to its architectural roots. Our aim was a serene, inviting interior that highlighted the home's unique character while projecting a polished, move-in-ready appeal.

The project began with a clear objective: refresh and refine this striking mid-century modern residence. My team focused on precision, starting with meticulous wall repairs to ensure every surface was flawless before any paint touched it. This groundwork is paramount; even the best color falls flat on a poorly prepared surface. We moved through the spaces, coating ceilings and walls in a uniform finish of Sherwin-Williams Loggia (SW 7506), then giving the front door its due with a coat of Sherwin-Williams Eminent Bronze (SW 9015). The final step, of course, was a thorough cleaning, leaving the home crisp and ready.

Looking at the exterior, the choice of Eminent Bronze for the front door, initially a mustard yellow, created an immediate shift in the home's personality. The original yellow, while vibrant, had a certain intensity. Eminent Bronze, with its deep bronze and olive-brown undertones, provided a sophisticated, grounded counterpoint to the stone façade and dark trim. Its LRV of 14 absorbs light, giving the door a substantial, almost sculptural presence that anchors the entrance. In the bright morning sun, the bronze elements in the paint catch the light, revealing a subtle metallic depth, while in softer afternoon light, it reads as a rich, warm dark brown, connecting beautifully with the surrounding natural landscape.

Inside, Loggia (SW 7506) was the foundational choice for the walls and ceilings. Loggia is a warm neutral, a taupe-beige that carries an earthy weight without feeling heavy. Its LRV of 48 means it reflects a moderate amount of light, preventing the space from feeling either too stark or too dim. In natural morning light, particularly through the home's unique ribbed glass windows, Loggia softens, its beige undertones becoming more apparent, lending a sense of calm and openness. As the day progresses, with warmer afternoon light, the taupe notes deepen, providing a cozy, enveloping feel. Under 3000K interior warm lighting, its inherent warmth is amplified, making the entire room feel inviting and comfortable.

The entrance is a prime example of Loggia's architectural weight. It defines the space, acting as a quiet backdrop for the home's modern details, like the wooden stair treads and cable railing. The uniform application on both walls and ceilings creates an unbroken visual plane, making the space feel taller and more expansive, particularly beneficial in a multi-level entry.

The Coordinating Palette

To complement Loggia and Eminent Bronze, I'd suggest a few thoughtful pairings. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008) works exceptionally well for trim and doors throughout the interior. It’s a soft, warm white with an LRV of 82, offering a clean contrast against Loggia without feeling stark. It grounds the warm neutral, giving defined edges to the architectural details.

For a mid-tone bridge, Benjamin Moore Sag Harbor Gray (HC-95) brings a muted, earthy gray with subtle green-brown undertones. This color would be a sophisticated choice for cabinetry or an accent wall in an adjacent space, continuing the natural, grounded feel.

And for a deep accent, Sherwin-Williams Cascades (SW 7621), a rich, deep blue-green with an LRV of 5, provides a powerful contrast. This could be introduced through textiles, art, or even a small piece of furniture, echoing the lush greenery outside the home and adding depth to the earthy palette.

Craftsman Field Notes

The success of this project lay in the meticulous execution. For precise wall repairs, we used a high-quality spackle and sanding regime to create a truly uniform surface, ensuring the paint would adhere smoothly and evenly. Primer selection was critical; a good quality, tinted primer was used to block previous colors and ensure the Loggia achieved its true color depth with fewer coats.

For the walls and ceilings, a flat or matte sheen was chosen for Loggia. This finish minimizes imperfections, absorbs light, and provides a sophisticated, velvety appearance that enhances the depth of the warm neutral. On the front door, a satin or semi-gloss finish for Eminent Bronze offers durability against elements and daily use, while also allowing the bronze undertones to catch and reflect light, giving the color more dynamism. The pride in surface preparation and the uniform, consistent application of paint from my team is what transforms a house into a home, ready for its next chapter.
